Product Description

Medium carbon steel coil is a high-strength steel product with a carbon content ranging from 0.25% to 0.60%. Compared with low carbon steel, it offers significantly higher strength, hardness and wear resistance, making it the material of choice for components that must withstand heavy loads and friction.

At JGT Group, we produce medium carbon steel coil primarily through hot rolling, with thicknesses from 2.0mm to 20mm and widths from 600mm to 2000mm. Common grades include 45#, C45, C50, SAE1045 and S45C, manufactured in accordance with GB/T 699, ASTM A29, EN 10083 and JIS G4051 standards.

Each coil is supplied in the rolled, annealed or normalized condition, and can be further processed through quenching and tempering to achieve the required hardness and toughness. Surface options include bare and pickled & oiled finishes, with slit edges available for precision applications.

With an annual output of 200,000 tons, JGT Group is a reliable medium carbon steel coil manufacturer and supplier serving customers in more than 100 countries. We support customized dimensions, slitting and packaging, and every shipment includes a mill test certificate for full traceability.

Main Features

1. Higher Strength & Hardness

With a carbon content of 0.25%–0.60%, medium carbon steel coil delivers significantly higher tensile strength and hardness than low carbon grades. It is the preferred raw material for components that must support heavy loads, resist deformation and maintain dimensional stability under stress.

2. Excellent Wear Resistance

The elevated carbon level gives medium carbon steel coil outstanding resistance to surface wear and abrasion. When combined with quenching and tempering treatments, hardness can be further enhanced, extending the service life of parts such as shafts, gears and pins in demanding working conditions.

3. Full Heat Treatment Capability

Medium carbon steel coil responds well to annealing, normalizing, quenching and tempering. This allows downstream customers to tailor mechanical properties — strength, hardness, toughness and machinability — to the exact requirements of their application.

4. Consistent Dimensional Accuracy

Every coil is produced with precise control of thickness, width and flatness. Our advanced rolling mills and online gauge control systems ensure uniform strip thickness across the entire coil length, reducing material waste and ensuring stable performance in high-volume production lines.

5. Rigorous Quality Assurance

Each medium carbon steel coil is inspected for chemical composition, mechanical properties, surface condition and edge quality before shipment. Mill test certificates covering all test data are provided with every order, giving you complete traceability and confidence in material quality.

6. Factory-Direct Competitive Pricing

As a medium carbon steel coil manufacturer, JGT Group supplies directly from our factory in Tianjin, China, eliminating middlemen and offering highly competitive prices without compromising quality. Our stable production capacity of 200,000 tons per year ensures reliable, on-time delivery for large-scale and long-term projects.

Applications

Medium carbon steel coil is widely used where strength, hardness and wear resistance are required:

⚙️ Machinery & Mechanical Parts

The largest application area: shafts, axles, gears, sprockets, connecting rods, couplings and machine frames that must withstand heavy loads and continuous operation.

🚗 Automotive Components

Used for transmission shafts, gear parts, crankshaft blanks, steering components and other structural parts requiring higher strength than low carbon steel can provide.

🔩 Fasteners & Hardware

Medium carbon grades are commonly drawn into bolts, studs, nuts and pins, where strength and hardness after heat treatment are critical for reliable fastening performance.

🚜 Agricultural & Construction Equipment

Plough shares, tines, buckets and structural parts of farming and earthmoving machinery benefit from the wear resistance and toughness of medium carbon steel.

🛠 Tools & Hand Tools

The substrate for spades, hammers, wrenches and other hand tools that require a hardened working edge and good impact toughness.

📦 Other Applications

Railway components, springs, rims and general engineering parts. Our engineering team can recommend the most suitable grade and heat treatment for your project.

FAQ

Q1. What is medium carbon steel coil?

Medium carbon steel coil is a steel product with a carbon content between 0.25% and 0.60%. It offers higher strength, hardness and wear resistance than low carbon steel, and is widely used for mechanical parts and structural components that must bear heavy loads.

Q2. What is the difference between medium and low carbon steel coil?

Low carbon steel coil (carbon below 0.25%) offers excellent formability and weldability, while medium carbon steel coil provides higher strength, hardness and wear resistance but is less formable and requires more care in welding. Medium carbon grades are often heat treated to achieve optimum properties.

Q3. What grades and standards do you supply?

We supply grades including 45#, C45, C50, SAE1045, SAE1050 and S45C, manufactured according to GB/T 699, ASTM A29, EN 10083 and JIS G4051 standards. Equivalent grades can be supplied upon request.

Q4. What is your MOQ and delivery time?

Our MOQ is one 20' container (about 25 tons), and trial orders are accepted for samples. Standard production lead time is 7–15 days after deposit, depending on specification and quantity. We ship from Tianjin Port, China, and can arrange FOB, CIF, CFR and DDP terms.

Q5. Can you provide customized sizes and processing?

Yes. We offer slitting, cut-to-length, edge trimming, pickling & oiling and custom packaging. You can specify thickness, width, inner diameter and coil weight according to your production needs.

Q6. Can medium carbon steel coil be welded?

Medium carbon steel is weldable but requires preheating and proper welding procedures due to its higher carbon content. If welding is a major part of your process, we can recommend the most suitable grade and supply detailed technical guidance.

Q7. Do you provide quality certificates?

Every order includes a Mill Test Certificate covering chemical composition and mechanical properties. Third-party inspection such as SGS, BV and TUV is available upon request.
